Candidate Information
The Nomination Period for the 2026 Municipal and School Board Election began on May 1, 2026 and closes on August 21, 2026 at 2 p.m.
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing has prepared a Candidate Guide for the 2026 Ontario Municipal and School Board Elections, which outlines key considerations such as eligibility to run, nominations, campaigning and campaign finances.
Qualification and Eligibility
A Candidate for Municipal Office must, at the time of filing a nomination, be a qualified municipal elector and fulfill all of the following requirements:
- Reside in the Township of Adjala-Tosorontio, or be the owner or tenant of land in the Township, or the spouse of such owner or tenant;
- Be a Canadian Citizen;
- Be at least 18 years old;
- Not be legally prohibited from voting; and
- Not be disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office.
You are not eligible to be a Candidate if you are:
- A person who is not eligible to vote in the Township of Adjala-Tosorontio;
- An employee of the Township of Adjala-Tosorontio, unless an unpaid leave of absence has been taken;
- A judge of any Court;
- A member of the Assembly as provided in the Legislative Assembly Act or the Senate or the House of Commons of Canada;
- A public servant within the meaning of the Public Service of Ontario Act, except in accordance with Part V of the Public Service of Ontario Act; and
- A Candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement in the last municipal election.
Filing a Nomination
Nominations will be accepted in person by the Clerk (or designate) during the following dates and times at the Municipal Centre, 7855 Sideroad 30, Alliston:
- May 1, 2026 through to August 20, 2026 during regular business hours (Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., excluding statutory holidays)
- August 21, 2026, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. (Nomination Day)
Appointments to file a nomination can be made by email at elections@adjtos.ca or by phone 705-434-5055 ext. 221. Those wishing to submit a nomination are encouraged to set up an appointment ahead of time to ensure staff availability.
All nomination forms must be submitted in person by the Candidate or the Candidate’s Agent and be accompanied by the prescribed nomination filing fee of $100.00 per office/school board or $200.00 for the office of Mayor, payable by debit, cash, certified cheque, or money order. All nominations are required to be endorsed by at least 25 persons eligible to vote at the time the endorsement is signed.
Candidates are required to show proof of identity and qualifying address at the time the Nomination Paper (FORM 1) is filed. If an agent files the nomination form, it must be accompanied by a piece of Government Photo Identification including address, with the signature of the candidate prior to filing with the Clerk or designate.

Copies of the package are available electronically on the Township of Adjala-Tosorontio website or physically at the Municipal Centre, during regular office hours.

2026 Municipal and School Board Elections Procedures
Important Dates
- May 1, 2026
- Nomination, Registration and Campaign Period Begins: Candidates, and Third Party Advertisers may begin filing the prescribed Nomination and Registration Forms, with the Clerk. After Candidates file their Nominations Forms the Campaign period begins.
- August 21, 2026
- Nomination Day: The final date for Candidates to submit or withdraw Nomination Forms, with the Clerk, prior to 2 p.m.
- Election Signs: Candidates may begin to erect Election Signs. Election Signs must be removed within one week following Voting Day.
- August 24, 2026
- Certification of Nominations and Declaration of Acclamations: The Clerk will examine and certify all nominations by 4 p.m., and declare any Candidates elected by acclamation.
- September 1, 2026
- Voters’ List: The Voters’ List will be made available to certified Candidates, by the Clerk, through the Candidate Module.
- October 16-26, 2026
- Voting Period: Internet and Telephone voting will begin Friday, October 16, at 10 a.m. until Monday, October 26, at 8 p.m.
- Voter Help Centre: During the Voting Period, Electors can come to the Voter Help Centre, located at the Township Municipal Centre, to meet with trained Election Staff for information and assistance, have their elector information added or revised, and if desired, cast their vote. - October 26, 2026
- Voting Day: Electors may cast their vote up to 8 p.m.
- October 27, 2026
- Declaration of Results: The Clerk will declare the official election results.
- November 15, 2026
- 2026-2030 Term of Office Begins: New Term of Council begins.
- December 31, 2026
- Campaign Period Ends: The campaign period ends for Candidates and Third-Party Advertisers and no further expenses or contributions are to be received. Should a Candidate or Third-Party Advertiser have a deficit they must provide written notice to the Clerk about the continuation of their campaign period.
- Deadline to Destroy Voters’ List: The final date for individuals provided a copy of the Voters’ List, to destroy all copies, and provide notice to the Clerk.
- March 30, 2027
- Deadline for Filing of Financial Statements: Last day for Candidates to file financial statements with the Clerk, prior to 2 p.m.

Developed in partnership with Nominee, Stronger Leaders, Stronger Communities is designed to equip you with the tools, resilience, and confidence to meet these challenges head-on — and to rediscover the purpose that brought you to public service in the first place.
This workshop series is being offered for no charge in two streams:
- Stream 1: For elected officials at the municipal level across Ontario who are considering re-election in 2026 and preparing their path forward.
- Stream 2: For community members considering a run for municipal office in 2026—first-time candidates who want to build confidence before launching a campaign. Civic-minded leaders who want to explore whether elected office is right for them.
This workshop will prepare you for municipal office and equip you with what to expect running as an underrepresented candidate as well as key strategies for running a successful campaign.
If you are a youth interested in running for municipal council in October 2026, we have a workshop for you! The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) is offering a series of workshops for young people thinking about running for municipal office in the October 2026 elections.
These sessions will provide insights and strategies to build your understanding and confidence around how to become a candidate and running a campaign.
Facilitated by three current municipal leaders, Natasha Salonen-Mayor of the Township of Wilmont, Cam Wales-Councillor City of Brockville and Aidan Kallioinen-Councillor Town of Espanola, you will gain firsthand insight into
- What to expect running as a candidate and as young person
- Critical strategies for successfully campaigning for municipal office
- Understand what it takes to become a candidate
- Strategies for engagement including communication

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) is offering a series of workshops for urban Indigenous peoples thinking about running for municipal office in the October 2026 elections.
These sessions will provide insights and strategies to build your understanding and confidence around how to become a candidate and running a campaign.
Facilitated by Melanie Pilon, the first Indigenous Mayor of Municipality of Wawa and member of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory and William Morin, member of Michipicoten First Nation and founder and leader of The First Peoples National Party of Canada (2004-2013), you will gain firsthand insight into:
