Winter Controls
The Township of Adjala-Tosorontio Public Works Department provides winter maintenance on Township roads and sidewalks. The Township follows guidelines set out by the Province’s Minimum Maintenance Standards (MMS).
Snow Removal
After becoming aware that the snow is deeper than 5 cm – 8 cm, the Township will deploy resources to reduce the snow to less than 8 cm within 12 hours of zero snowfall.ย ย
After becoming aware that the snow is deeper than 8 cm, the Township will deploy resources to reduce the snow to less than 8 cm within 16 hours of zero snowfall.
After becoming aware that the snow is deeper than 10 cm, the Township will deploy resources to reduce the snow to less than 10 cm within 24 hours of zero snowfall.
No winter maintenance will be performed.
The plow will be in your neighbourhood 12 – 24 hours after the snow has stopped. Crews work day and night to address snow accumulation.
Private Mailboxes
Snow Clearance: The area in front of a rural mailbox must be kept clear of snow and ice to ensure uninterrupted delivery of letters and parcels. Delivery agents require at least one car length on both sides of a rural mailbox to pull over safely, deliver the mail then safely merge back into traffic.
Every reasonable action is to be taken by the equipment operator to accommodate and protect private mailboxes placed alongside municipal roadways during winter control operations. If the mailbox is damaged by the winter operation repairs, or replacement will be made for incidental damage to private mailboxes during winter control operations as a result of physical contact with the plow. All mailboxes must be in good condition so that the snow coming off the wing does not dislodge it.
Icy Roads
Deploy resources to treat an icy roadway within sand-salt mixture as soon as practicable after becoming aware that the roadway is icy within the time frames set out for each class of road as follows:
- Class 3 roads: within 8 hours
- Class 2 Roads: Within 12 hours
- Class 5 & 6 Roads: within 16 hours
- Unopened Roads: No winter maintenance will be performed
Winter Sanding: Application to be as sand-salt mixture, to be applied in a 1.0 to 1.5-meter width at the centre of the road to assist in achieving service level objectives for snow accumulation and icy roads. Ice blading is used as an icy road treatment on unpaved roads.
Road Patrol will be carried out daily to inspect for general road conditions resulting from winter weather. All roads are patrolled weekly but only roads chosen to provide a representative sample of current road conditions are patrolled daily.
Road Closures
The Township does not formally close roads to traffic due to weather conditions. Road closings due to prevailing weather conditions will remain the responsibility of the Ontario Provincial Police
Sidewalks
Currently the Township only maintains sidewalks in Everett and Lisle.
The Township will start on sidewalks once there is more than 8 cm of snow and there is zero snow falling. The Township will reduce the snow accumulation on sidewalks to be less or equal to 8 cm within 48 hours of the last snowfall. This is a requirement set out by the MMS.ย During a significant weather event, the Township is not required to clear the sidewalks until after the declaration has ended.
It is not a requirement for residents to clear snow on the sidewalk in front of their homes, though it is very much appreciated and helps our community. The Township aims to ensure all sidewalks are maintained as per theย MMS.
As outlined by theย MMS, the snow is to be reduced to equal or less than 8 cm in depth. If the depth of snow accumulation on a sidewalk is less than or equal to 8 cm following maintenance efforts, the sidewalk is deemed to be in a state of repair in respect of snow accumulation.
If you believe the sidewalk may need additional service, contact Public Works. Remember sidewalks may not be addressed until up to 48 hours after snow has stopped falling.
Parking
No.ย Fromย December 1 to April 15 of each year, our snow removal parking restrictions come into effect. Any vehicles that interfere with snow plowing or winter maintenance,ย may be ticketed or towed.ย Learn more aboutย parking restrictions.ย
Residents are asked to be mindful when parking on Township streets during the day in the winter to allow effective road maintenance during heavy snowfalls. Parked cars that impede snow removal operations and plow trucks can be ticketed.
No. Do not push snow onto the roadway or sidewalks. This is a violation of theย Highway Traffic Act.ย Do not push or place snow onto Township property.
The waste bins are not to be placed on the road or sidewalks; this will interfere with snow removal. Bins can be placed on the residents boulevard about 8 ft from the road edge, the County of Simcoe can still pick-up the bins at that distance from the road edge.ย Learn about bin placement.
Clearing snow from a fire hydrant in your neighbourhood could save precious moments if your home had a structure fire. The Township staff will clear a fire hydrant, though it is extremely appreciated when residents clear ones on their property.ย
If there was any accidental damage to your lawn while the crew was completing maintenance operationsย you can use our Report a Concern form to report the issue.
